I dont think it makes a difference, just swap them till you get the light to go out,unless the float is stuck ?

That was just bizarre enough of a comment to make me look. You have downloaded the service manual (which contains the wiring diagram), right? Gr/Rd goes to the gauge, other is ground. And there is no positive and negative marked on the sender; it's either open or closed circuit.
