Pull it out of the carb body and hook it up to a good 12V battery. Come back in a couple of minutes. You should see that the needle extended out of the bystarter body. If it has not moved, it is not working properly.
yeah but i dont know how to hook up mine to a battery because i would need wires to hook it up to and thats a pain in the ash. i tried that today. how long would it take to actuallly move the needle

Don't know how to hook it up? It only has two wires. Put one on the negative and one on the positive. It should only take a minute or two for it to move.
Get 2 wires with alligator clip ends at Radio shack. Hook the positive to one bystarter wire, and negative to the other. I'm not sure if polarity matters. And be very careful not to touch the two wires together - you'll short out the battery
