What brand of gear oil should I use for my gears?

Post by Singo69 »

I am putting some secondary gears in and was wondering what Brand of gear oil I should use? Is 75w good enough or do you think i should go for 85w-90w?

Honda recommends 10W-30 motor oil, not gear lube.

You won't get a recommendation for gear oil because it's wrong. If thicker is better, I vote pack that sucker with grease and see what happens...

i cant believe we are here again. read the manual, there is a reason honda recommends 10w-40. if you fill it with gear lube then it gonna be thick and add alot of resistance. just put in the motor oil and ride the thing. geez

Greetings:

I've been following this thread, a little. It's a pretty under-stressed area, and I'm inclined to believe you can use whatever you want in the tranny case without Dire Catastrophe. Personally I like to use what Honda-san recommends, but that's just me. Whenever I fill the crankcase of the Fun Family Truckster, I always seem to have about half a quart of Mobil 1 5W30 left over. Since it's free, available, and matches Honda's prescription, that's what I use in the Elite. I've never had a problem, and haven't read of anyone reporting any from this practice. Hypoid gear oil, Butter-Flavor Crisco, or Mazola Corn oil will probably all work just fine, too. It just isn't that critical.

Quoth Singo:
oh wait does it say that your gears will eventually fail if you use 10w-40...hhmmm maybe you guys should use your head instead of following the manuals all the time, and before calling people stupid....I THINK IM GONNA STICK TO THE GEAR OIL..lol
You go, Dawg! Let us know how it turns out, OK?

Lucas makes a synthetic oil stabilizer that could be added to the 10w 40 to make it last longer.

You should change your transmission oil frequently with brand new gears because they need to break in.

whatever oil you go with......do an oil change after the first 100 miles or so.

Thank you odinxxix for the first response that actually puts to light what actually started this whole discussion. I was starting to wonder what in the world the seller of this lube intended it to be properly used for. Your answer explains it, I googled and looked up the transmission you referred to it's totally different in design to the Elite 80. Perhaps Singo69 should do the same and actually learn something from the shared knowledge offered here.

The lighting was fine from the start. The first two posts answered the question of what should be used. These illuminating posts were ignored, and this Syrupy goo was touted as an "in your face" to the learned forumistas.

Indeed, equally illuminating is the info from odinixxix on the actual purpose of that 'thar "Scooter gear lube", for chain drives, an application where goop is good.

In the case of the scooter at hand, the owner is simply refusing the advice he asked for.

My friend had this elite e that actually still worked.

There was no oil in it and was caked with grease and dirt and still worked!

Any oil would be better than NO oil..........and even no oil and dirt didn't kill it.
