1996 SA50 tire change with issues-with progress updates

Post by Eft37 »

So, after seeing Wheelman's deal of the day tire post, I went for it.
Today I'm trying to replace them but ran into 2 issues:

A>What is the size of that big rear wheel nut?

B>I used this site :http://www.jacksscootershop.com/tire_info.html to get my size info and bought 2.75x10, now after reading the service manual today, I see (and on the bike I see) 3.00x10 size. Should I bother mounting the 2,75? I'm a fat guy and I do notice in some performance tips that an easy gain is moving a tire up, so one would assume a tire down will be negative.

I think I just convinced myself to not swap sizes, but when the 3.00 arrive, what's that nut size?

I put on the 2.75 and gained a whole 1/2 mph, but then the 1985 Spree is still stock. BBK and Taz gears this summer if I find the time between the other 7 scooter, 2 quads, 2 boats and the wife.

There is nothing you can't move with a long enough lever. I keep several different length pipes around to make breaker bars longer.

stock size tire on your bike is a 3.00x10 tire. you should have gotten the 90/90 tire. the easiest way to get it off is use a breaker bar, tighten the rear brake and stomp down on the breaker bar while holding the rear brake. you might have to spray pb blaster on there as rust sometimes form on the nut and axle threads. torch heat might help too.
Nothing like getting stroked!

2' breaker bar and realizing the threads are backwards on the nut got the tire off. Rim needs restoring, super dirty/rusty.

Finally mounted the tires today. Used Wheelman's lube technique, took 2.5 hours, and I ended up using a chisel too, ruined my fresh rattlecan paint job. Am satisfied, though.
