Air Box on Spree? Help?

Post by curvwear »

I have been reading multiple threads trying to figure out the issue but just had to ask.

I bought a spree that needed some tlc.

Got it fired up last night it runs great and then you try to give it gas and it bogs out.

The person had some cheap aftermarket air cleaner on it, is this the issue? I ran it for a minute without it and it still did the same thing. Do I need a stock air box with stock air filter? Or is there something I can use in place of it that will work just as well?

Or is this not my issue.

Please help Thank you in advance.

Yes, some Spree scooter won't even start without the airbox. None of them run without one.

Is it possible the jetting in the carb needs to be changed to match the increased air flow?

Has anyone done this before?

your better off getting the stock air box then tring to upjet for the air. but i guess if you keep the aftermarket filter on it the upjet will be ok. try #90-92

I have an after market air filter on mine right now too. After reading that the spree wouldn't run right without the airbox I thought I would just try something. I measured the air inlet of the stock airbox and then I taped off the whole air filter except for roughly the size of the opening on the airbox. This seemed to do the trick. It runs great this way so far. I'm still going to go get a normal air filter for the airbox but this seemed to do great for the time being.

If you have not done a plug chop to confirm jetting at WOT, you are operating in no man's land.

ok put a stock air filter on and still has the same issue of bogging down around 20 mph.

Is there something wrong with the auto choke? it seems to run fine till it is warmed up then it bogs down again.

I recently picked up an 86 Spree and the owner removed the top of the airbox and used half inch thick scotch pad looking filter. Bike runs strong all the way up to 28 and 30mph if I pooped prior to riding. Anyways, is there a way I can get a new lock set with keys for this spree since owner lost the keys.
