85 spree issues

I recently got an 85 spree that doesn't want to run unless the idle screw is all the way in. And even then it doesn't really want to run all that well and has lots of white smoke. I remember reading a few days ago about someone else who had a similar issue but I can't seem to find it now. It has the stock airbox and filter and its getting spark and fuel. Any thoughts?

edit: i think i need to check the muffler/exhaust port also. when it does run, its REALLY quiet.

Vacuum leak on the intake is your problem.

It's suppose to be quiet.

Well i had it idling and tryed spraying starter fluid around everything to check for air leaks but nothing changed. So i took the carb apart and recleaned it and nothing changed. So i took the air filter out and took the lid off and it seems to run alot better. So i tried just running it with the lid on, with no filter and it went back to running bad. Does that mean its not getting enough air with just the airbox lid on? How do I go about fixing that?

And now another problem showed up. I cant turn it off when its running.
i took the key out and turned the switch off but it just keeps going.

sounds like maybe ur to rich.try moving the c-clip on the throttle valve to a leaner position.movin the clip to the higher position is leaner and lower position is richer.

This helped. It can idle with the air box now but will die after a few seconds.

in the book 4-8 is were it tell you were to set the jet needle .. is your there or were??
all so when you look down were the throttle slide goes there is a small hole that goes to the air screw (4-6 ) and down in the bole if its clog it will give you a hard time .. if you have the crab off and the bole off put the tub of a can of crab cleaner in the air screw hole and and when you give a short blast you will see were it come out in the crab bole plug that hole with your finger ..then another short blast as you look and see if the crab cleaner come out the hole in the crab .. but be careful it not good in the eyes

The pilot jet isnt clogged. I made sure about that. I tried 2 different carbs so i dont think its a carb issue. It would randomly rev up on me then die also. Sounds like an air leak but cant seem to find it.

Intake mainfold/reeds. If it's producing the same effect with two different carbs, then the issue has to be some vacuum or air leak somewhere.

have you checked the air filter?

Moving the needle clip can NOT have any effect on idle mixture. The main jet is NOT flowing fuel at idle so the needle has nothing to control. Do none of you guys have any understanding of how a carb works? :jack:

Did you check your turn signal fluid level?

Well i guess i over looked that while cchecking my muffler bearings haha.

So i have replaced all intake gaskets, swapped cylinders, and replaced the base gasket. Now the exhaust gasket needs to be replaced. It will startup and idle but sounds like a chainsaw with that exhaust leak. Anyone have an extra one they want to part with?

I'm running oversize muffler bearings on my Spree, gave me so much compression that I have to push start it  Good luck Kevin.
