could be a few different things. driveface, gears rounding off, c clip not proprtly in place, or more common, its the kicker cover itself.
i went through quite a few gears, and come to find out all i needed was a new kicker cover. the whole in the cover where the kicker gear comes through gets elongated after a while, and will allow play on the kicker. this in turn will wear down the gears faster. if you have a spare cover, or have access to one. try it out.

like i said, could be the cover itself. if the holes elongated or cracked it will cause unneccesary wear on the gear. try changing the cover

True dat. I just got my new cover in yesterday, swapped it out and she was all good. Then changed plugs and did some minor tuning, and my babys back on the road as of last night.

Has anyone trying drilling out the covers and press-fitting a new brass or Al bushing back in for the kicker?
