HID headlight and charging system question.

Post by Ben L. »

Hello, I've been lurking around this forum a few days now and finally got around to joining! Anyways I bought my 1989 SB50P last week and already swapped in an UNI filter. This weekend I hope to install a BBK and gears.

Well tonight I went for my first night ride with the HID headlight I installed. I ran the power straight to the battery with a toggle switch. My question is, is there a way of modifiying the charging system? The light works great for a few minutes then once I start using brakes and blinkers the battery charge must drop and kills the headlight. Has anybody had luck running HID's?

Thank you for any help!

I constantly have to charge my battery when using my hid's

I also use a bigger amp/hour battery than stock.

What is the rated output of the stock voltage regulator?

Maybe you could wire a second one in parallel and double the charge rate of the battery.

What Tjamz said!!!

I get about 6-8 hrs of run time before I have to recharge. and I run a 5amp battery.

The HID is awesome but it kills my battery. I run a 2001 headlight and use a hi/lo H4 bulb so when the HID act's up I still have a regular head light.

And if you get a ac/dc converter you can run your hi/lo switch on the scooter instead of a toggle.

Also adding a uni filter without rejetting the carb is asking a seized engine from to lean a fuel/air mixture.

Thank you! I will be changing my battery fairly soon, also I'm gonna check the voltage regulator and see if I can modify it at all. I did rejet after switching the air filter.

Have any of you had problems after changing the battery with the HID dimming when using the brakes or blinkers?

LEDs reduce power consumption while HIDs suck power like a Black Hole.
