Decarbonizing a Spree Muffler... Anyone ever looked inside?

I have a spare muffler I picked up off of eBay that I wanted to do some experimenting on. It's kinda rough on the outside, so it's perfect for what I have planned. First step was to decarbonize it. In the Wikispreedia page, it says a clean Spree muffler weighs about 3 pounds. I threw mine on the scale it came in at 3.6 pounds. Perfect candidate for a decarbonization... I didn't want to do the torch or lye method, so I figured I'd cut it open and scrape out all the carbon to see how much carbon is really built up in it. To my surprise, there was hardly any carbon inside. It was packed, however, with fiberglass sound deadening material. I pulled out all of the fiberglass and threw it back on the scale... It weighed in at 3.2 pounds.

Just curious if anyone else has found this. Nothing in the Wiki page mentions fiberglass deadening material. In reading the directions for the torch method, it sounds to me that the red band moving along the muffler is not only burning out the carbon, but also the packing material.
