1985 Spree... Timing issue?

Post by 87spree70superbee »

Okay. See the video to see what I'm talking about. If anyone can help me solve this problem, it would be greatly appreciated. I have no idea what's wrong.

Red 87 Spree... Ended up buying the same one mentioned below.

I started riding my uncle's 87 Spree at the drag strip when I was 8...

It's easier to stop caring three years ago than it is to fix it in present time.

Spark trigger coil alignment is preset, and has no adjustment. If the spark is off in timing a likely suspect is the flywheel to crank timing is off. A sheared or missing key can allow large timing mis-alignment from stock. Pull the flywheel and inspect, BTW good vid of the issue :)

the timing being off would not cause it to crank like that.

is there less resistance to ground at the starter motor when the kill switch is on?

Okay, so... Remove the fan and the metal thing behind it? I'm still a :newb: . Jeez, I have only had the bike for two weeks, an oil pump and who knows what now...

How would I check for that? I have a multimeter...

put the Multimeter setting on Ohms.

Put one lead on the batteries' negitive terminal and on on the starter motors' green wire.

It should read zero (or close to it) Flip the run/kill switch and repeat the test.

Dont try to remove the flywheel with out the proper tool.
This is not a timing issue.

Alright. I'll try it later. Thanks for the help, and don't worry, I won't pull the flywheel. :-)

I pulled the fan off when I cleaned everything, never pulled the flywheel.

Yeah, I had it running, it actually ran when I bought it. Ran pretty well until last week. Then this started up. I'm going to save the flywheel pulling for last. I'll try everything else first, I don't want to f- with the flywheel, lol

That is a classic timing issue. I'm with mouse, flywheel key would be my first guess and if that it good, a bad CDI could cause this.

Definitely NOT a starter issue,

Def the way to go - rule out anything easy and starter ground is easy to check out.

Definitely NOT a starter issue,

why would a bent flywheel key make it stumble like that?

And why would having the kill switch on or off make a difference?

This is a two stroke , so valves are not opening or closing.

why would this not be a starter issue?

A bad ground to the starter would make it stumble

The kill switch being on could be making a better path to ground.
