1984 Honda Aero 50 - headlight bulb replacement

Post by ChiefsAero »

I'm a little confused on how to change the headlight bulb on a 84 Honda Aero. Haven't started taking everything apart yet, but looking at the manual it almost seems as if the whole headlight unit is one piece and you can't actually replace just the bulb.

Is this the case? Or can you take the unit apart and throw in a new bulb?

It's called a sealed beam and at one time they were required in the US.

Just cut off the back housing of old bulb and replace it with a 1998 elite-s socket/bulb and some silicone.

Some break out the rear of the inner bulb and put a small halogen inside to keep the seal. This helps keep the reflector shiny - but environments vary so it may/may not be an issue for the owner.

Another way is to cut the back of the reflector as maddog and the link below suggest.

http://www.bulbs.com/espec.aspx?ID=10634&RefId=567 you could solder jumpers on the terminals. Ive been thinking about using one of these bulbs if my spree light ever croaks. I have the 6 volt version for my headlight in my express that takes replaceable bulbs. I was almost thinking you could use two small sheet metal screws to hold the bulb in. For the hid option there is an hid i saw somewhere that had a halogen high beam as well as the hid for low beam. Ill find the link and post it when i find it.

My low beam on the headlight for my '89 elite went out. I'm current running with the high beam on. Seattle PD doesn't seem to care much about legal equipment on vehicles, what with all the gun violence this year...

Anyhow, I do want to replace the headlight to get back a low beam. Looks like the stock bulb is about $40-$45 + shipping, which seems like WAY TOO MUCH. I'd like to put in a lower cost bulb.

The link to the HID replacement is a nice write up. I don't want to go the HID route though, too much light/expense/overkill (for me). I really do like the way that the HID bulb was placed into the sealed beam reflector in the write up. I'd like to get a bulb rated at the stock 25W/25W or maybe 35W/35W and put that in the same way. I want a pinout for the bulb to be the same as the stock (H4) but those bulbs don't have a "seal" washer and plastic backing to help secure the bulb in place like in the write up. It looks like I'm going to have to find a H11 bulb in the wattage I want and wire it up custom like.

Any comments? Am I just not thinking right about it? Is there a H4 pinout bulb like what I am looking for? What is the deal with the interior of the sealed beam? Does that go bad after a while after I break the vacuum (I assume it is a vacuum)? Any idea on the performance of the new bulb hacked into the old system?

Thanks,
Mark

My headlight on my 85 aero went out. Where can I buy a new one? I only see used ones and expensive, like $60. Or, any cheap alternatives? Thanks!

Have you tested the headlight to confirm it is dead?

Connect the headlight terminals to a battery direct with separate wires than your scooter. Eliminate the possibility of your scooter’s wiring being the problem. This test will be definitive opposed to assumptious.

I bought this project scooter couple of weeks ago, finally got it running last night, and found out only the high beam works.
Reading the manual, says only to replace whole headlight (which I cannot find), not bulbs. I just read posts above stating I need to cut open and replace, lots of work, PITA, wish another way
