how to replace crank seals

Post by Chicago Ben »

Can someone explain how to inspect and replace crank seals? I have replaced top end gaskets, piston, rings and inspected reeds... Can only come to the conclusion my crank seals need replacing.

Any help is appreciated

look for oil seepage around the seals.

Ok... I'm looking at every schematic and I'm just having a hard time understanding what you guys are referring to as seals? the crank itself rides on the bearings... not seeing seals on each side?

the seals will be part of the crankcase schematic not the crankshaft

service manual describes using a special tool to install the oil seals - is this necessary? can it be done without special tools? I have ordered a flywheel/stator puller and a clutch holder...

Tap them in with a socket that's a hair smaller than seal.

They are kind of a PITA to remove, I used a snap-on pick set and hooked them out of there. Take note of the depth when you remove them because you don't want to drive the new ones in TOO deep>

Are you removing crank? If I don't remove crank I use a couple picks to remove seals. Try needle nose....you just don't want to scratch/gouge case

why are you replacing the crank seals?

Did they show signs of leaking?

Those seals are brand new?

Honestly I don't know what else to do. I am going to at the very least inspect them for leaking.

I rebuilt the whole top end basically - new base & head gasket, new piston and rings (from taz) - the cylinder walls seem fine ( no scouring) - although they haven't been mic'd

I inspected the reed cage - looks good , seals well -

bench crank over cannot get anything over 90psi. Gets to 90, does not move (does not drop at all until I release the pressure on the meter)

The meter is a brand new gauge from harbor freight (yes I know it's harbor freight but still... been used maybe 10 times max)

When you built this engine up for me you had to use 2 base gaskets to bring the compression DOWN to a good range (130) , now I cant even come close

Top end, reeds, oil seals... what else is affecting my compression here?
