What octance?

Post by clsmooth »

I was told by the previous owner that these scooter will only run on cheap stuff (around here that's 87 octance). Anything higher will wreck or blow the engine apparently.

Thing is, the previous owner was some pothead kid. So I'm wondering what grade octane you guys runs and with what results?

87 octane is fine. The engine will only run hotter with higher octane and with the fuel at 3 bucks a gal or so the extra money aint worth it. Just run the cheap crap.

Sounds like the choice of octane comes down to personal preferance then... ?

Pretty much. Try both and see which you like better.

Higher octane runs colder, BTW. That actually slightly degrades performance on low compression engines. My thought is that I'd rather the engine ran colder on an air cooled plant.

well me and a freind of mine experimented with the gas thing and octain long ago. the cheap gas in his car ( his car had a warped rod in it) when it got to 80 the car started ticking from the rod and was at 6 1\2 rpm's. the good gas we got to 90 and moter just started ticking while running at 6 1/2 rpm our theary the moter doesent have to work as hard with the good gas as it does with the cheap gas

Higher octane protects against predetonation, which is probably what you heard.

It's really engine dependent. Just run a tank or two and make up your own mind.
