se50 gears in a af16?

Post by bonesv »

Recently acquired an af16 motor which was not running and discovered that the transmission cover has the designation; SE50E-. It counts out the gear ratio to be approximately 11:1. I was not aware that those covers could be swapped, or that those gear sets could be swapped into an af16 motor.

My question is, has anyone else here done this, and would an af05e gear set/cover also swap without any mods? I mean it may not be very much of an increase, couple of mph maybe more, but if it saved buying new af16 gears??? Are the gaskets an issue? I would not think so.
Who will offer their experience here? Thanks for reading and for any intelligent response. (no dogs please)

Greetings:

I'm betting on no one until you try it. I believe it should work. Putting a 16 countershaft in an 05 block requires a little shortening of the countershaft. The extension of that logic is that the shorter 05 counter may require a little shimming to track straight. Other than that. the parts should interchange and AFAIK the cover gaskets and bolt patterns are the same. YMMV until you bolt it up however.

I have done it.

if you have a double bb af16e cover or the af05 cover the af05 gears will swap into an af16, as a set, with no problems.

early 94-98 af16 trans covers and af05 trans covers are exactly the same.

What about the other way around? 16 gears in an 05 with the 16 cover?

Glad I could help :2thumbs:

11.1 gears do give a mile or two on the top end.

10.1 gears will not do anything for top speed unless you are very light (under 130lbs)
with out performance upgrades 10.1 gears are too tall.

X2 to what TrafficJamz said except for the last post. The 10.2:1 gears do make a difference. It is a very specific scenario, long downward slopes.
