removing piston from caliper

Post by evilone »

any ideas on getting this piston out of the caliper?
Soaked with PB Blaster and tried using compressed air to pop it out but it's stuck.

I'd keep soaking it with pb blaster and heat it gently with a torch and spray it with again with pb blaster. Repeat that a few times. Then I would try pushing the piston in a little bit with a c clamp. And then trying the compressed air again. You need to break the bond the rust has made. I think once the piston moves even a little you may be good to go. Make sure you put a little piece of wood where the pads go when you apply air, so if the piston does pop out it doesn't become a projectile. You might be able to wrap the piston with electrical tape you don't damage the piston and twist it back and forth with a big pair of channel locks.

Heat with a torch, spray water. Repeat until it comes free. I assume your changing the seal out as well?

I'll try your ideas. I'll have to be easy on the heat though since the caliper is off my Yamaha Axis and I don't know if I'd find a compatible seal if I kill it.

Hopefully there isn't rust inside the cylinder that is keeping it from moving. If you do heat it just heat it gently, it might not take much. All you need is some heat to help creep in more pb blaster to free it up. I'd spray a ton of pub blaster inside the brake cylinder and move it all around to get it to soak in. Pb blaster is the key, even if you don't use any heat, spray it often and let it soak. I'd be on the hunt for a new seal now, I have a feeling that even if you don't really kill the seal its gonna leak.

Your probably gonna have to change that seal but if you use heat spray water on it too. It creates that expand and contracting effect

Like i stated above...this is off my 95 Yamaha AXIS. If i knew of a place to get parts i would get a new caliper (and the body panels that are missing)

That's awesome that there is a cross ref for a replacement part :-)
