Is a starter "rebuildable" ?

Good Morning
I think my starter has died
it started making a grind when you would go to start, try again it would start fine
now it only makes a spinning noise but doesn't do anything else
The kickstart works fine, so i'm still getting around

Am i able to rebuild the starter ?
or is it just a pull and replace ?
I'll look for another one if that's the case

Thanks in Advance !

Greetings, hope your project is going well.

I've taken apart, cleaned, and greased many starters for these scooters. It's not difficult except for having to hold the brushes back while re-assembling - sometimes you have to get creative there.

The problem is that if you find something really broken in there, I'm not sure you will be able to find parts to replace it - that's when you'll probably need to replace the whole starter. If it's making noises, no telling what you might find.

I opened up an Aero 50 starter once and found half of one of the brushes had cracked off and was loose in there rattling around. I removed it, cleaned everything up, and it's been working fine ever since.

If it's not working right, what have you got to lose.

good luck

cool thanks
I like your way of thinking
"it's already not working, can't make it any worse" :)
i'll take a look in the next day or so

Sounds more like a starter clutch than a starter motor issue. I don't know if you have a clutch or a pinion, but what you describe sounds like slippage.

i'll look through the service manual tonight and see what it says, pull it if i'll still be able to drive without it

Belt dust, clean the starter and case with a tooth brush.

Starter motor sounds fine... Perhaps dirty. Bendix sounds like the problem.

On the NH80, the starter motor and pinion are all 1 assembly - very limited access to the pinion without taking the starter assembly apart.

OK
Whats the "Bendix" ?
and Breeze, thanks for the picture, does all this mean i need to look at buying a new one ?
I hope not, they look like they are about 150 bucks !
half of what i paid for the scooter !
I'll just kick start if that's the case

I believe that bendix, pinion, starter clutch, and rotor are all names for the piece marked 'rotor' in the drawing. On the Spree, the bendix (or pinion) is a separate piece and can be examined/cleaned/replaced without involving the starter.

IMHO kick-starting is fine and it is completely up to you as to when (if at all) you want to look into the starter. Once you decide to do something about it, once again IMHO you should consider examining it and checking to see if it is something easily fixed rather than spending the money. It could be that a simple cleaning would straighten everything out.

Good luck

Bendix is called rotor above. Like MD said, prolly full of belt dust. Disassemble and clean and grease when you get a chance.

Agree with others. The bendix can get jammed full of belt dust, so full it stops working. If it's something else in the hardware, the motor part of the assembly can be found on eBay for less than $50. They're not expensive. Look here: http://motors.shop.ebay.com/i.html?_kw= ... kw=starter
