Need an air filter for a spree

The airfilter on my spree completely turned to mush

I need a new one and I was wondering if I could just make one?

I have a clean sponge that I was thinking about cutting up and fitting in there, would this work?

A sponge will not work. Don't bother.

You can make them but it's usually not worth the hassle.

If you have a fabric store in town, you can buy foam that is used for upholstery. Joanns calls this stuff "Heavy Duty foam", and it's green... no idea what it is, but gasoline doesn't dissolve it and it appears to be the right stuff. I've used it a couple times when I lived in the boonies and it was easier to acquire than the OEM part.

Buy correct thickness, cut 1/8" larger than size, oil, and install.
