84 Honda Aero 80 not reaching top speed
I finally got my 84 Honda Aero 80 on the road. I did a ton of work to it. I rebuilt the carb, changed the brakes and tires, replaced the whole fuel system( gas lines and filter). The fuel tank is clean. I also did a tune up and I changed the gear oil as well. It starts right up and is running great and accelerating fine and hits about 36-37 mph and tops out there. I know it supposed to get up to about 43 or so. I know that i used to hit that speed easy in the past. The bike only has 2000 miles on it. i did not use a stock fuel filter, i use a screen type. What do guys think is stopping the bike from hitting its potential??
Re: 84 Honda Aero 80 not reaching top speed
check the drive belt and rollers. Make sure to remove any grease in the variator, it is not needed and makes the rollers harder to roll. even though it only has a few thousand miles it has plenty of years to make the belt slip or degrade.

Re: 84 Honda Aero 80 not reaching top speed
90 jet and better reeds or bend the reed stopper all the way open so it almost touches the case and the variator service as dunrite said it a huge thing. I just did my aero 80 variator the other day, and just cleaning the grease out made a big difference. A can of brake clean and a rag goes a long way. I put Dr pulley sliders in it a couple days ago and never looked back. The stock rollers really suck so any aftermarket roller made with a better material than the stock one are made of is going to help performance. Mine can hold 42 mph consistently on the flats and will do 50mph on a decent downhill. Make sure the belt is in spec as well, mine is only a little worn and still in spec by quite a bit, but I'm tracking down a new one just because.

Re: 84 Honda Aero 80 not reaching top speed
All of the aero 80s were flat in the top end, they all do it. Bear figured out the 90 jet and better reed thing its a huge deal on its own. Get the variator dialed in and your scoot will be so much more use full on the road when it goes the right speed. My aero did what your aero is doing before the up jet and boyesen reeds. Mine topped out a near the same as yours stretching the throttle cable. My friends aero same thing when she got hers a year ago, all low milage scoots. Hers got the up jet and new reeds, i did it last may.

Re: 84 Honda Aero 80 not reaching top speed
Is the variator service difficult? Where did you get the rollers?
Re: 84 Honda Aero 80 not reaching top speed
download this manual. http://www.hondaspree.net/Aero80_NH80_Manual.pdf It will help to identify parts and give procedures for most things you will need to do. Also use this for help with all sorts of things. http://hondaspree.net/wiki/index.php5?title=Main_Page

Re: 84 Honda Aero 80 not reaching top speed
Super easy, if you you can get your hands on some sort of impact gun. If not, go on time hunt for a strap wrench to hold the drive pully so you can get the but off. Or a proper holder tool. Once you can get the nut off its all a piece of cake. Note which bolts came out of what hole for the side cover, the bolts are all different lengths. The pulley comes off and the variator just slides off as an assembly, flip it over and pull the three 7mm head screws holding the grease cover on. Pull up the ramp plate don't loose the three plastic guides in ramp plate. You will see the rollers in there pull em out and clean the sucker of all of the grease nice and squeaky clean. A parts washer would be helpful. Brake clean works awesome. I got my sliders on eBay. They are 18x14mm 16 gram for rollers and 15 gram for the Dr pulley sliders. Have a look at the rollers they will likely have flat spots. I think it was wheelman who gave me the tip of cleaning up the outside edge of the ramp plate to prevent premature flat spots in the future. Put it all back together and drive the crap out of it

Re: 84 Honda Aero 80 not reaching top speed
I think you want to have things as close as possible to what its supposed to be. The pitch of the the sides of the belt is going to be important I would think. I'm going to try and match up my belt in the next week or so as well at my local belt supply shop I'll be posting my findings

Re: 84 Honda Aero 80 not reaching top speed
Mine states it should be 726mm x 16mm x 30mm
I found one on FleaBay that is 729mm x 17.7 mm x 30mm an ATV belt
I figured it was so very close it should be fine
especially at $8.00 to the door !
we shall see in a few weeks when it shows up

Re: 84 Honda Aero 80 not reaching top speed
stock aero 50 weights are one of the best weights along with daytona weights, polini blue ramp guides, also if you have a 112mm clutch get a 107mm stage 6 clutch.
some people dream of speed, i own your dreams!

Re: 84 Honda Aero 80 not reaching top speed
Man that is really close can't wait to see how it goes. The little extra length should make up for extra width. Great find you should post the eBay link in case it works.bubonik wrote:Mine states it should be 726mm x 16mm x 30mm
