82 urban express variator question

Hi all, I'm not having any luck searching other forums so I thought I'd ask here. I'm putting a new belt on my Urban Express and cleaning the grease out of the variator while I'm in there.

I'm wondering if I should leave the backing plate off or put it back on. Has anyone removed theirs? Notice any difference?

Mine never had a backing plate while I owned it. Ran fine but I have no comparison for you.

Greetings:

Honda went with grease and an o-ring cover early on. This was probably because the Italian scooters he was copying did it. Eventually experience showed the grease wasn't necessary and Honda gave up on the idea in ?1994. NO aftermarket variators use grease at all, so unless there's something special about the Express vario, it seems OK to leave it off and run dry. For sure it makes tuning weight changes a whole lot quicker. And less messy.
