Where did the gas go?

Post by Upshifter »

My second 1986 Spree, that I bought this summer, was in a shed for over 20 years, yet it was adult ridden by a woman golfer. Since the scooter hadn't been ridden for many years, I went through it cleaning the carburetor, fuel tank, fuel screen, etc. I left the covers off until I was sure everything was okay and there were no gas leaks or anything. Anyway, with only 739 miles, It runs great, cruises at over 30 mph, starts and idles nicely, etc.

It seemed to use too much gas, though. I hadn't filled it up, so I didn't know how much gas it used. I hadn't ridden it much to check it out. Today, starting with a full tank, I decided to ride it to town, about 4 miles or less away. Before I could get back home again, the fuel gauge was setting on "empty". I thought something was the matter with the gauge and that there had to be plenty of gas in the tank since I had ridden less than 8 miles. How wrong I was; the gauge is correct; I almost ran out of gas!

Now, I'm not new to motorcycles and scooters, but I can't see where the gas went. There are no visible leaks, or wet spots on the scooter or on the ground. As I said, the scooter looks and runs great; and most people think it's new. What do you think about this problem?

maybe your carb's float needle is not seating properly.

Check for leaks from the cars overflow while the scooter is running.

My first thought is the carb overflow dumping gas along the road as you ride.
          ...but shet, that's a lot of gas.
If the gas was being run through the cylinder, it would not run so well...

Threading a screw into the overflow hose to block drainage is a quick check.
