I have a 1985 Honda Spree Scooter and I lost the key. Any suggestions ? I called a locksmith but he wanted $250 just to come to house. I tried a local dealer and even with all information, vin number etc. They said I needed a locksmith. Can't a key be cut from vin numbers?[/b]

Not VIN number, but the "cylinder" number found on the ignition lock cylinder. Removal required.

Agree, just take it off and to them, a good keysmith can recut it in 5 minutes, dont let them take you to the cleaners. I have a local keysmith that would normally rekey it for $20-30. You could replace the ignition switch and get new keys off ebay for around $40.

Some dealers don't want the liability of selling a thief the means to steal a bike. Take the lock and your registration into your dealer. It cost about $10 to have a new key cut at my dealer.

Hard to believe your local dealer told you to go to a locksmith - was that a Honda dealer?

Locksmiths seem to be hit or miss as to both price and capability. From my experience and from what I've read in here, a Honda dealer is your best bet. If the dealer cuts keys, they should have the little Honda key machine that works off the code found on the switch cylinder. You'll need to remove the front plastics and either write down the number on your ignition switch, or better yet, remove it and take it in with you so you can test the key when made.

My dealer charges less than $10.00 - I've done this from the code several times and only once was I asked for any ownership proof, however I would suggest you carry some just in case - a bill of sale worked for me.

If you're like me and your closest Honda Dealer is 45 minutes away or more, make sure you call first. I usually try to pick up some GN2 while I'm there to make the trip worth it.

There's a code on the ignition switch. The dealership can cut a key from that number in 5 minutes. In AR, this cost $10.

Start calling the other Honda dealerships in your area until you find one that's competent.

Mr. Free is cleverly pointing you back to this very same post (I assume that was intentional).

Assuming you've read the responses, then I guess you're saying that there is no Honda Motorcycle dealer or locksmith near you that cuts keys from the code. As far as I know, there is no other option without a key to copy.

When you say you've tried everything, do you have the code? Is the problem that there are no Honda dealers near enough to you?

or get a second hand key take the lock off the bike and have it repined to suit by a locksmith .Although if you do this you may aswell have them just cut a new key to suit the pins in the lock .This is all very simple stuff for a proper locksmith to do .

Can I use the lock from the seat instead of the ignition? Or do they still need that number.
How about taking that paper that is on the wiring into the dealer? Or can I just write down the number.
Thanks for the help.
Mike
ps, I was able to get the scooter running and driving today after sitting for three years.
Key is bent and looks like it will break soon. Works in the ignition but not the seat. Weird.
