Hey dkevin...start with new plug...clean the hole really good that is in the float bowl. This hole is tiny and feeds fuel into the well that feeds the bystarter circuit. Any blockage of that hole will starve the cold-start enrichment circuit from fuel.
Secondly, CONFIRM the pilot jet to be completely open and flowing fuel. In not confirmed open, clean meticulously until you can spray carb-cleaner through that pilot, and see it flowing into the carburetor throat, right next to the Main jet. Of course, the main should be confirmed open as well.. Do all that, and you've got a good start at fixing the [problem described....motor.

New plug(s) ordered and also a new coil/CDI unit. I will pull the carb and disassemble it for a good cleaning. I will let you know how I am progressing and ask questions as I go. I see a new carb is only $30 or so...

AVOID buying a carburetor.
OEM carbs are better than clone carbs...fact.
Almost any OEM carb can be cleaned unless corrosion has taken a lethal toll.
WHY did you buy a CDI/coil ??
Those are also usually troublesome and OEM stuff rarely goes bad.
Maybe you should slow your roll and do some diagnosis... ...motor

I figured it couldn't hurt to get a couple of new spark plugs, plug wire (and the coil is built into the wire)..and the CDI was included as part of a package..all told about $30...I will heed your advice and do some diagnosis now...Your advice about clone carb vs OEM carb is the kind of advice I need...Thanks!

Try your new parts...they might be fine, but there's a reason the package only cost $30.
If your original stuff isn't broke, please don't pitch it.
I suggest a compression check to start. 114 p.s.i. minimum service limit.

I thought I'd better update this post...I checked the plug and it was pretty wet. I removed the carb and cleaned it, blowing all the passages clear.I reassembled it and after charging the battery, it started right up and quickly died again. I checked and the gas was flowing into the carb. I had to recharge the battery again (it had been sitting for 5 months or so) and I will begin to troubleshoot the bystarter (new) and ignition system. Can the crankcase of this engine get overfilled with oil? I am getting a weird kickback when I try to start with the electric start. I will check my manual to see how to check the oil level. So far, the engine will start and run for 3-5 seconds but when the bike tries to idle, the engine dies.
