My spree died yesterday :-(

Post by patthesoundguy »

Got a bout a mile up the road from home and I heard a little noise and it croaked :-( I think that thing is sending me a message that it wants that dio motor installed ;-) I'm still going to trouble shoot it. Temps were fine below 300 still could have spiked the gauge isn't that quick. Doesn't sound right when it turns over. Im going outside to check the compression in a bit. Guess it's time to start ordering dio bits eh?

I haven't had the chance to look at it yet, but I think you are on to something with the gasket idea. Spark plug was tight, checked that first on the side of the road, before I pushed it back home ;-) it had spark. I was wondering if I lost a gasket or broke a head bolt or a head bolt came loose or something along those lines. I'm working on the road so Monday afternoon I'll have at it. I have enough top ends kicking around so if I cooked the bbk for some strange reason its not a total loss. A another spree bbk would be cheap anyway. And like I said I have that af18e waiting to be built.

Update on this spree. I had a min yesterday to pull the plastics and get the compression tester on it Image I'm still going to pull the head and have a look see, but good compression is a good sign. Im going to check the flywheel key as soon as possible. I have fuel, fire and compression. Maybe just not happening at the times those things are supposed to ;-) I'm not ruling out a cylinder issue yet though.

No its original crank bearings. That could explain why it doesn't sound right turning over for sure. The compression is exactly the same as it was when I put the kit on around 125psi or so. You have me thinking there swimmingfree, it doesn't spin over freely when I crank the kicker. Especially with the plug out it should spin for quite a while, which its not. Well I'll know once I pull the jug. Its back to cold temps again for the week so it will be a while before I can tear into it. Par for the course with a high milage block.

Greetings:

Just a hunch, but before you sacrifice gaskets consider pulling off the fan cover and have a feel of the magnet flywheel. In cold weather, a bell that wasn't torqued on just right can decide to back up, shear the Woodruff key, and alter timing. It would clang around the stator a little too.
This happened on my '87 Early Aero.

Its easy to check the bearings. It is usually the pulley side that goes out first. Remove the belt and pulley and rock the crank shaft up and down. If you feel up and down or side to side play then the bearing is done. You can do the same on the stator side also. You need a mag puller to get the magneto off to inspect.

Thanks Taz and wheelman I'll have a look at those spots. This week coming is going to be warm and the ski hill closes on Sunday so it will officially be scooter season for me ;-)

Will do:-) the temps are up here and it has rained a ton and all the snow is 99Ôäà gone. So scooter time is near. My scooter shed is getting a new addition so I'll have a shop to scooterize stuff.

Re: My spree died yesterday :-( update April 15 2014

Post by patthesoundguy »

Well it was a perfect day today to dig in and figure why the spree croaked back in October as it was 22 Celsius :woot: . I pulled the belt and the fly wheel. Totally is bad crank bearings. I can spin a couple revs it is kinda free but then it binds up and is rough, I can feel the bearings binding. In think I'm going to swap the motor from the spare spree to this frame as the spare spree has no papers. Going to go stock for a while and after I get it all done up with the antique plate it probably time for the dio swap
