inop speedo

Post by TgyroX »

Whats the typical failure with the speedometer drive gear ? My cable is free, took it off from the front wheel. Can see the flat tab that drives the cable, but it does not spin when the front wheel does.

Typically the cable breaks. Can you make the speedo operate when you turn the cable?

I appreciate the response, but man, doesn't anyone read the original posts? This is the 3rd reply I've had where a comment is made that doesn't apply to the problem.
I hate to come off like a *, but come on.....

Yes the cable spins. My problem is the drive at the wheel is not turning

There are only a couple moving parts in these. If not rotating, the gears are probably stripped inside. You'll need to remove it to check.

Yes you are coming off wrong.

You say that you removed it from the front wheel.

Im asking if it is functional the cable and the speedo.

A drive gear could be inside the speedo to a noob.

Noobs ask dumb questions sometimes and overlook the obvious so, I was asking a legitamate question.

I get the question. Pull the hub and inspect that the parts are all there. There's a bit of heat going on in there from the brakes being used which can displace the grease used to lubricate the worm gears. Over time, air and water can enter the hub and cause rust/seizure of the small shaft that turns the gear/speedometer cable shaft. Simply replace the hub if you can, or free-up the gear shaft, which is usually/possibly pressed in to the hub. Replace the seal and re-grease the gears. This is my experience from a limited standpoint. Wisdom shared here is subject to scrutiny but it does not change my experience. Good luck with the project. :eyeroll:

"Use the search function or the google function" is one that people could have said, instead theyre trying to clarify whether you indeed did this or just saying you did. Instead of angering the people trying to help you be modest and take it as it comes.

You have a model that many of us are not familiar with, and the ones that do have TG50s are usually very good with them. Im leaving mine in the back of the garage because Im not versed in them at all. I abhor thinking about the day my gyro doesnt start, run right or even the speedo cable breaks.

Thanks Jason, I've looked in the service manual but its not much help. Seems the whole manual only tells you how to take things apart, and a few torque specs.

I'll dig into this situation once i have it starting and running reliably. Are the components for that system still available ?
