another, bogs at takeoff after warm up

Post by ped »

Hi everyone, my 95 elite sa50 bogs at take off. only for the first few feet. when it warms up.
So when it's cold it take right off. then it warms up ,and it bogs for the first few feet at every take off. after that it runs fine.
this is what I have installed: polini 72cc head kit boost port matched. 8.4.1 rear gears, 1000rpm center rear spring & 3 -1000 clutch springs, 92 jet on stock carb, stock air box drilled, drill out the stock exhaust pipe. keli speed variator.
I cleaned out the carb twice. and adjusted it many ways. no luck.
any info on this problem would be appreciated. thanks.
P.S. the polini head only has about 25 miles on it.

I have another elite same setup but no boost port matching and it run perfect 50-55mph.

Gregg's right...test the bystarter because it could be failing to shut off the enrichening circuit and causing a rich condition once warmed. Good place to start... :thumbwink:

or the pilot jet is to small in the stock carb and when the choke shuts off theres not enough fuel till you twist the throttle more and start engageing the main jet

hi paul, I see what your thinking. I was thinking about the pilot hole and cleaned it. if I port matched the head I think I may need a carb with a bigger pilot jet?
I have another elite same setup but no boost port matching and it run perfect 50-55mph.

What do you mean you port matched the head? Are you talking about port matching the cylinder to the block? I'm no fan of the stock carb, especially for a 72cc polini kit.

hi LoveMyHonda. yes I port matched the cylinder to the block. also the bottom base gaskit. as I was told this will improve the flow.
I may have to keep the stock carb in order to go 50+ miles on a tank. back roads no gas stations.
thanks.

If you want to keep stock carb you could try drilling out the pilot jet.

Heh. You upsized the displacement but want the same fuel economy?

I can tell you right now, economy's going to be set by your main jet, not the pilot.

Hi noiseguy. I think I was getting 65mpg stock. now in getting about 45-50mpg. but i'm all ways at WOT on the back roads.
any lower mpg and I may not make it to next gas station

What I mean is that enlarging the idle jet wouldn't impact your MPG much. Most of the fuel is going up the main jet.

But agree, if you're going for economy, you want a small-bore carb, which is what you have now.

Strap a 1 gallon fuel tank on the back rack and increase your range 1X.

You know, I wonder if one could add a custom tank to the inside underseat area. Add another vacuum-operated petcock and T the fuel and vacuum lines to it. Probably could put 1.5 gallons of fuel in that space... would move range up to over 100 miles.

Bogging is a lean condition. Idle jet's not adjustable, and you've changed the main jet.

Any of you guys ever try changing out the venturi tube? This is the tube under the main jet. It controls the mix at 1/4 to 3/4 throttle.

Suspect that it's lean for what you're doing. Perhaps get a spare and drill it out? These parts are available from Honda but I've never understood the numbering structure.
