Newbie question about rollers and belts

Post by Circusbear »

So this is my first scooter. 1983 Aero 50 that I traded a bicycle for. Found this forum and it has been amazing. Any question I have I can find the answers somewhere in the forums. So here is a question for you guys. I see many people talk about rollers and belts and I want to know are these things something I should look at and inspect? Is it part of the maintenance of a scooter or should I wait until I notice a problem?

pull it apart measure the belt width, clean all the grease out,Check rollers for flat spots if they have them then replace them ,reinstall dry without any grease and with out the grease cover plate that screws to the back of the aiator with 3 little screws .

What should the belt width be? Is a narrower belt an indication that it is wearing?

Thanks for the help. I will pull it off tomorrow and see how everything looks.
I bought a bicycle for $50 and later traded it for this Aero. The only thing wrong is the stator. I can only ride it for about 15 miles and the battery dies. I can't find a stator anywhere. Until I do find one I'm stuck taking short trips and charging the battery overnight.

That is an extremely well kept aero. I have never seen one like that in real life.

So the engine dies as well when the battery goes? Does that beast have a kickstart?

The battery may just be toast. Check the battery and make sure that all the cells have water up to the marks on the side of the battery. If the batter is dry or very low that would explain tthe battery going dead so quickly. Also check all of the electrics over carefully with the manual in hand you may just have a loose wire or ground off somewhere. There is very little to go wrong with a stator I bet the problem lies in the battery itself.

I thought it was the battery too. Purchased a new one and the same problem exist. Returned that battery and the new one is doing the same thing. I replaced the voltage regulator first and this did not fix it. When running I am only getting 4 volts going back to the battery so all the power to run the lights, brakes, turn signal, horn as well as the engine is having to be supplemented with the battery power. After 15 miles or so the turn signal and horn quite working. The headlight , tail lights and brake lights become very dim making it unsafe to drive. The engine will continue to run as long as I want it to and I can kick start it, just without the lights and stuff. The battery will be dead and I can recharge it and start the whole process over again.

I checked all connections coming off the stator and they are intact. Took apart the alternator and it looks nice and clean, no grease or rust. All that is left is the stator.

Yes I have the manual. I have carefully looked over the wiring and have verified all the ground wires are grounded.

Found an OEM stator! It is shipping today from Michigan and should be here by this weekend.
Hope this solves the charging issue.

All are battery dependent except the headlamp, unless there's something different about the '83-84 models. Are the stator coils corroded, marred or damaged? That's a part that fails infrequently. Voltage regulator is a more usual suspect, but it sounds like you've done a good job of diagnosis. Hope the new stator fixes it.

One set of coils was wrapped in paper(?) and not viewable but the exposed coil looked dark and dirty, almost as though it had been burnt. I bought a voltage regulator first because it is so much cheaper. Since that did not solve it I gave in and spent $109 on one from the only place that had it. College Bike Shop in Lansing, MI. Never heard of these guys but they were super helpful and even went to the shelf to make sure it was really in stock before I bought it. I hope it gets here before this weekend, the scooter is already torn down awaiting it's arrival.
