Cylinder Honing

Hey guys i was wondering wats the best grit to hone a cylinder I've seen from 80 to 600 and i noticed the higher the grit the more expensive can anyone explain that. I dont care about spending but i would like to know that money is well spent and if the 600 compared to the 80 is the best thanks everybody. Its the 41mm flex hone they got for sale on amazon let me know if it would be worth it!!

I used to hone my own, but now I just drop the jug off at the local motorcycle shop, they use a honing machine and do a perfect professional job for only five bucks.
I have a pile of hones of various grits, in my basement gathering dust, I prefer to have perfect professional results.
I could have saved a lot of money over the years by not buying any hones.

I use a brake cylinder hone and get decent results. The ball flex hone is best though. I think its around a 200 grit you need. Someone be correct me if I'm wrong on that. I wish I could drop off a cyl and get it honed for 5$ I'd be doing it all the time.

Yeah i wish I could go to machine shop but most of them out here in Vegas told me they don't have machines that little but thanks for the input guys I cut and polish granite and to leave I nice polish you would have to use 80 to 1500 to leave a nice mirror polish while you apply water but that's stone and this is iron

You don't want "mirror" polish on the cylinder anyway. A nice cross-hatch pattern is what you're looking for. The tiny crevices hold a thin film of oil to keep the piston and cylinder from becoming One.

Ball and flex hones are NOT the proper tool for the job. They will "roughen" a surface but they dont do what you need most- Make the cylinder round again.

This is the right sort of tool for the job-



They do come in multiple sizes. Any motorcycle shop that does boring will have one the right size, but as the OP found out, the car sizes are too big.
