aero dies when turning

Post by speedy_aero »

I have a 1986 aero 50. It developed a strange problem. If it is leaning to the right it will sputter and not be responsive to the throttle. But if it's upright or leaning left it runs great. I checked the float it seams to be working correctly. And I have no idea where else to look. Any ideas?

Greetings:

Look into NASCAR racing.

Sinceriously, the carb take-up would've been my first thought too. The Bear once posted a pic where he used clear line plugged into the open carb drain barb, then pulled upward to show the actual fuel level in the bowl.

Otherwise, worn wires under the saddle or near the engine mount might positionally short

do you have clear/ see through fuel lines? could help in diagnostics
it could be gunk blocking your petcock inside the tank ?
I've had cases where the gas cap was too sealed and created a vacuum in the tank and wouldn't drain well.
I'm just spit balling here
how far is "leaning" btw

I am not thinking it is a fuel level in the carb bowl. it will start sputtering within nearly as soon as i lean it to the side. in my experience it takes 20-30 seconds for the car bowl to drain. Also it never dies it just loses all power and sputters so there is gas getting to the cylinder.

leaning is 10 or 15 degrees. will happen when turning at any speed or when idling.

any wires specifically to check? i have looked at the bundle and not seen anything.

Do you have a bunch of weight on your key chain? I've heard heavy key chains can cause problems. I had an old brittle plug wire that was cracked and shorting out on my frame. I could not figure out why it was acting up till it was dark outside. You could easily see the spark grounding out.

yea if its that quick it probably is electrical.... can you check the spark when its tilted? (do a quick starter check with the plug tip touching the block/ground), also does the headlight dim when its tilted?
might be a grounding out of something, or the coil is doing something funky

the wiring diagram is in there.

I got out today for the first ride of the spring Yahoo!

It still has problems leaning right. It would not go over 20 which I usually get close to 35. Also way weaker at accelertion. I played with all the electrical lines and I can not make a problem to appear when upright or not appear when leaning right

I am thinking it could be reed values?
My other thought after reading the manual is the clutch (weights or friction pads)

Any thoughts?

These are possibilities:
partially blocked passage ways inside the carburetor body
cracked or leaking vacuum line from petcock
cracked or leaking fuel line from petcock
dirty/clogged fuel filter inside the fuel tank
check condition of throttle cable

Everyone has really good thoughts on the issue. I would totally clean the carb to rule it out. But first set the idle air mixture and idle speed up to spec. My spree when i first got it acted funny and would stall out on bumps and angles untill i set the idle air mixture correctly. Also check the air filter element and the intake tract maybe something is rolling around in there and choking the intake. Also check the exhaust maybe a baffle is loose and choking the pipe.
