Piston with boost port window vs non?

Just curious between these two designs. My old CMR 72cc kit has a cut out in the piston skirt, which I believe is for the boost port. My Polini kit does not have these. Looking around, I think either the Fabrizi , Malossi, or both have the ported piston. What is the difference between these two designs?
