Filters oil and gas
Hi there. I just inherited my grandpas 1986 spree. I was wondering because there was no filter in it due to it turning into dust, if I could make a filter. Also what type of oil is best used for it? I don't want to run the cheap s***. And finally can I run premium? The guy who helped me fix it said to run premium due to the fact that there is ethanol in unleaded now. What are my best options? FYI I ordered a filter and am waiting for it to get here I was just stating that so I can get to and from work in the meantime. Thanks!

Yes, you can make one from foam filter material.
I have used lawn mower filters and cut them to fit.
I have also bought UNI filter foam at a motorcycle dealer.
It is sold in large sheets of 1/2" thick material, and you cut to fit.
Use a brand name oil like Motul, Klotz, Lucas, Royal Purple, or especially Honda GN2 oil for injection systems, not for Pre-mixAarens wrote:Also what type of oil is best used for it?

The phrase, "turning into dust" was the key to recognizing that air filter was in question.

That is what foam air filters do in grandpa's shed...they eventually turn into dust and get sucked into the carb when some young whipper-snapper (or grandpa) decides to "get it running" before checking the airbox.codename47 wrote: no i didnt think the foam filter turned to dust.

The Honda NH125 Aero has an inline fuel filter from the factory and you can see it.
All the other Honda's I own have factory installed fuel filters, you just cannot see them.
If you remove the petcock you will find a micron screen whose purpose is to filter the fuel.
I have found no reason to add any extra fuel filters if I clean that micron screen.
As was stated before most all pump gas today has a percentage of ethanol, I run pump gas without issue. .
The Spree should start without an air filter, just don't expect perfect performance until the intake system is perfectly factory stock.
When I resurrect old Spree's and Motocompos ( I have done more than 16 ) I clean the gas tank until it is spotless.
I use new petcocks.
If this is not done, perpetual carb problems will occur.
Sometimes tank cleaning includes cutting them in two, sandblasting the rust out.
I also replace the fuel hose and clean the inside of the carb until spotless.
Don't forget to clean the bystarter well feed orifice, unless the carb is spotless you will have issues.
I usually wash out the oil tank and lines, paying special attention to cleaning the oil filter ( yes there is a screen in the hose that filters the oil )
I use a drill to prime and flush the pump and hoses.
I use Amsoil Interceptor or Honda two stoke oil.
All motorcycle shops have a great selection.
You should be able to find a quality two stroke oil there.
I also do a muffler clean out, using my gas grill and cook the oil out of the muffler.
Takes over an hour and smokes a lot.
I sandblast the exterior and repaint with header paint.
Looks great, but you could skip the paint without issue.
I have learned the above actions by trial and error.
All of the scooters run great and still do.
I have learned the hard way not to skip any of those actions.

Yes johnniespeed that was a great post the only thing I will add is the best bet for the air filter is to get the proper foam filter and oil it with the gear oil as laid out in the manual. Either get a filter new from Honda pre oiled or... I think noiseguy sells spree air filters.

Ok so I changed the gas checked the spark replaced the air filter put better oil in and cleaned out the carb. My spree starts runs for a sec and then dies out when I gas it. I can't make it to the road before it dies. I know the batterie is dead but the kick start solves that problem right? Or are there any other possibilities for why my new toy won't move?

Could it have to do with the batterie? Because when I pull on the throttle is when it starts up then wants to die. I'm very new at this restoration thing and I'd like to get my lil spree runnin like it was when grandpa put it together in 86 and I don't know what the main jet is. Also how do I reattach the gas floater? I undid it to clean the tank now it won't reattach
