Spree Performance Problem
Okay, so im new here and to scooters in general. My brother and I picked up two sprees for 650 total. Mine was the cheaper of the two, so i didnt expect it to be better. But, mine has terrible performance at the top end. Mine tops out at 29 on a flat when im crouched over like an idiot. I can get to around 31 on my brothers, without crouching over. The piston and rings are good, as a newer, but not new jug and piston were put on it after i got it. I put a new ax24 belt on it which increased performance but not that much. I have the idle set right, and the mixture is at stock, and the carb is very very clean. The it feels like the scooter slows down every now and then when i get over 30mph going down a hill. And the scooter, even going down a fast hill, only gets to 33ish. I dont expect it to be a racer, but i would appreciate any halp to get it going faster. Oh, and mine is louder than my brothers, so could it have somthing to do with the exhaust? Please help.
Re: Spree Performance Problem
Spree not going to improve much over 30 mph...that's the designed top speed.

Re: Spree Performance Problem
Greetings:
Differences of that magnitude (3-5%) cannot always be traced to anything specific, but if they're the same model year and close to the same mileage, consider a new air filter element and a muffler bake-off to rid it of some carbon. Often that's all it is. Noiseguy cuts filters out of foam for $10 or so. Hit him up.

Re: Spree Performance Problem
Spree's are a ton of fun to ride, I have now repaired over fourteen basket cases, each one seems to have a little different personality, some are smoother at idle, some have a lot of power on take off, , some have more power midrange, some have higher top ends. All in all, I don't think any two have been exactly the same. Some seem to stop at 28 mph, some are ok to 30 mph and a couple would do 33 mph. Each one being stock as they came from factory.
I have done extensive CDI testing and have found on all Spree's the 84 Aero 50 cdi will perk it up big time, I don't know if extended use will cause engine damage.

How would the cdi hurt the spree?

Ignition timing map is different. ( change in advance/ retard curve throughout the rpm range )

Re: Spree Performance Problem
84/85 sprees top out at 28mph 86/87 go a little faster. The ax24 belt will not work for very long but it should give you 5mph more while it does work and the bottom end will suffer greatly. The ax24 will stretch and then rub the case. The idle air mixture has nothing to do with top speed but it needs to be set according to the manual so it will not be too lean on the first of the throttle and for when you let off the throttle from wide open. The idle speed and idle air mixture should be set at the same time. If one scooter is louder I suggest checking the air box and make sure the filter and lid are there and the air hose is hooked up and look over the exhaust for an obvious leak. There may be a missing exhaust gasket.
