1986 Aero 50 dies when I give it gas.

Hi all,
I've got an '86 Aero 50 that starts and idles great, but dies when I try to accelerate slowly. Oddly enough, though, it doesn't die if I accelerate quickly.
It also smokes a bit when I'm at full throttle.
Any ideas? My buddy thinks it might be something wrong with the CDI box, and we've checked almost everything else on the bike.
