Pulling a gear?

Post by Ruckenstein »

I know this can't be right. Is there a smaller puller to get the variator side starter gear off an aero 80 to get to the seal?!

I tried all the positions on a 3 job puller. Any help would be great. If this goes smoothly I will personally make a how to video on this and post it to YouTube this winter. It will amass 9 hits a year. Lol

I keep a diary of everything I do.
I'll dig it out when I get home and see how I did it.

You didnt say what year you have, usually helpful information, so I guessd a 1985. The puller that removes the starter gear is part number 07935-KG80000. Hope you have a friend at the local Honda Dealer who can smuggle it out for a night.

Ok, so my diary says I used a gear puller.

It also says I pulled from the edge, not the slotted holes as the legs are too thick.
So my guess is that I either used a bearing puller or I managed to cram a three legged puller in there.

If it was a three legged puller, my smallest size is a 3" AmPro.

Also, if you've not tried it yet, tighten up the screw against the crank then give a sharp tap on the hex end with a heavy hammer before tightening a little further.
This often shocks the fit in to coming apart.

DISCLAIMER:
My Haynes manual says it's a very tight fit and if successful removal can't be guaranteed, take it to Honda

One of these pullers. I had to grind down the carriage bolt heads on one side. For my next one I am fabricating a 4 bolt steel plate puller adapter. With only the two bolts twisting sideways was a major problem I cut a 2x4 to fit between the ground and puller and stood on it. I used a piece of plywood to not crush the crank threads. I slightly heated up the gear too. Good luck, and watch your fingers!
(One of the carriage bolts stretched out and got tossed)
