Aero 50 Piston Rings

Post by ck_ni »

Hi guys,
A bit heavy handed last night and broke a piston ring... it was an original one on an original piston... I have ordered some new ones...

Anyway my question is, is there a locating pin on the stock piston for the rings? or can they sit anywhere?

There are locating pins for both rings, whether you have the 83-84 or the 85-87. Before you go any further, download the free workshop manual for your model at:

Greetings:

Unlike 4-strokes, our Smokers have those pesky ports cut into them all over the place. If the ring rotates so that an end of a ring goes over a port, even worse things than a broken ring will occur. They're really tricky to squeeze in there just right until you've practiced a few times. As you implied, installing the rings requires a light, "just enough" stretch of one leg at a time. They won't open wide enough to drop down into the land all at once.

I use a set of piston ring pliers to install rings. No more broken rings. Worth the money I paid back in 1998 a whopping 8$ :-) http://www.princessauto.com/en/detail/l ... -p2918274e

I just use a little oil and some praying, but ring pliers seem like a idea, even at $30, imo.
