making a gas can out of a keg.

Post by MrJumps »

5l keg $15 well empty of course
weldable bung and gas cap $15
fuel tap $5
straps $5
some can to cover the o2 reg hole $tin can
total: some

can I solder this with a butane tourch and the kind of solder used on gas lines in a house? Then take it sideways on the back rack and strap it down with metal straps and cushions?

+1.3 gallons on a y on the line for almost 2 gallons on my spree.

anyone done this and have any advice? should I cut it open, make baffles and get it professionally welded or can i get away with soldering with flux?

Like this or something close but without the fuel pump.

--------

Or a jerry can upright and a fuel pump tapped into my oil plug or intake. Any input is greatly appreciated.

I think you can braze it instead of solder but not sure...

I swear I saw a build thread on here where he had a tiny keg strapped to his rear rack and plumbed in. Also saw one where the guy used a go-kart tank in the same fashion. The go-kart tank is on ebay for $100 or so.
I need to find some new haters...the ones I have are starting to like me.

These are aluminum, I think. My main concern would be with damage from a fall / lowside opening up the tank.

If can is thin, you would use a bolt-in brass fitting, and seal with gasket material.

If thick Al, you could tig in an Al bung with threads, and screw the brass fitting to that.

Agree with NG. If it's an aluminium keg maybe just take it to a welding/engineering shop and get them to weld the bung for you... Assuming you have an Al bung too? Aluminium welding is quite a skill, surely it wouldnt cost too much to get a shop to do it.

Pretty cool idea tho ;)

Well I have changed plans a keg is only 1 gallon and for me I wil be doing long highway commutes every day. I see nato has a 2.5 gallon jerry can tapped at the very bottom and strapped down and I want to run one of those at my feet and run a fuel pump through my oil plug. I could pull it back off if I wanted to hit the twisties even though I could just only put 1 or so gallons of gas in it and it wouldnt be too bad to ride with. The bike felt good even with the 1 gallon the back rack in a turn. http://m.ebay.com/itm?itemId=401045657181
Then tap it at the lowest point and run a fuel pump off the pulses from a modified oil plug. Then I would have almost 3.23 gallons of gas for highway riding. On the smaller 23mm cp carb that would give a rnage to almost Chattanooga on one tank of fuel. On the keg idea, it would be flimsy, hard to do and it would attract a cop to pull me over and harassing me I can feel it now. Lol

You know, stock Spree get ~100 MPG. Maybe you should throw old motor back in... how fast and far do you need to go, anyway?

Agree plastic fuel tank with brass fitting would be easier if not better looking. Marginally safer... not much, but a little, since tank is less likely to rupture on lowside.

College on a 55mph highway 20 minutes away by car. I need a little more than the stock tank.

Stock spree tank is like .6 comthing so that with the 2.5 will give me roughly 3 gallons, say if the bbk corsa on a 23mm cp and with a scorp or simular pipe would probbaly make 60mpg or so. That would give me a good range and I can keep oil in my back pack, then I can if really needed strap a gallon to the back rack too giving me roughly 60 more miles or so. So yeah, I know these bikes arent meant for long travel but that aint stopping me.
