Tapping spree carb
I'm waiting for my JB weld to cure to retap some threads. The microfiche says it's a 6x32 bolt. My 6x1.0 tap doesn't mesh as well as my 7x1.0 when compared to the OEM carb bolt. Any input from someone who has successfully retapped this easily stripped bolt hole? (Yes...it was stripped when I got it) :/
Re: Tapping spree carb
Please tell us or show us which hole you mean...
Of course, we assume you mean the flange hole.
Lots of luck...and when it doesn't hold again, put a bolt through the hole with a nut on the other side.

Re: Tapping spree carb
Yes. Front intake flange. It's a pretty tight fit to get a nut back there.
Re: Tapping spree carb
JB Weld threads never hold. Just get a longer bolt and add a tiny jamb nut behind it. You can hold the nut still with needle nose when installing. When doing mine, I had to dremel the Carb a little on the back to make room for the nut. Only because I used a nut I had on-hand. I could've made the trip to the hardware store to buy a slimmer nut but I was lazy that day.
PS: Don't use a bolt TOO long that it digs into the carb body. That will damage it's internals and the carb will be destroyed.

I need to find some new haters...the ones I have are starting to like me.
Re: Tapping spree carb
Ive also heard of people cutting the edge of the flange out (where the "PA" is) so you can slide the mounting bolt in backwards. Therefore, threading the nut onto the intake side. Theres plenty of room for the bolt head to sit back there...just don't take out too much flange while cutting!

Re: Tapping spree carb
Toss the JB weld... useless for repairing threads. Instead of using nuts or some other hack job, use 6MM helicoils and the original Honda mounting bolts. Stronger than the original aluminum, the repair doesn't show, and is professional.

559 sold ought to tell you something, and don't let anyone tell you they pull out or unscrew themselves either.. hands down the best repair. Fast, simple and permanent.

Yes, vintagegarage is entirely correct about the helicoil repair being the ultimate method.
But then, I know you have no problem utilizing the shade-tree trickery to avoid cost and the hour drive to the nearest supplier of professional hardware. Call it a "hack job", and keep those dead presidents in hiding.

Re: Tapping spree carb
Helicoil is best. Jam nut (thinner than regular nut) is another good solution. Modern knockoffs of these carbs use steel nuts for this reason or are factory "helicoiled".
If you have an end tap, you can also thread to 1/4" SAE... need the end tap b/c limited clearance to run tap through. If you don't, better off with helicoil in first place.

Tusk Tools also sells a 6x1.00mm kit that has everything you need to repair stripped carb threads (drill bit, tap, tool, and inserts) for around $14. I've been using that kit for a few years and have had good luck with it. There are a few thread repair kits out there and to let you know, the inserts are NOT interchangeable with other brands. So whatever you choose, be sure to get the right inserts.
PS; Take Meatball's advice and be careful not to use a bolt that is too long. I've seen a few carbs that have the bystarter brass stuck in the carb body because the carb body was disfigured by a long screw.
