AF05 87' Elite SE50 question.

Post by birdman »

Hello Everybody!

I just brought another friend to the darkside and got him into scooter world. He picked up an 87 Elite for cheap, and now, he has the tuning bug wanting to go faster and faster. I sent him to swapshop and he picked up a Malossi bore, polini variator, and some gears. He wanted a slick willy but its outa stock and hard to find. Anyways my question is this...

The first thing we did was the variator. I was thinking it was going to help a little with acceleration and a slightly higher top speed. We put it on and it runs the same as stock with 6.9g weights and the 6.3g weights installed. Is this thing restricted at all? It tops out at 35mph and will maybe creep up to 36-37. Is the CDI rev-limited, or maybe a carb/ airbox restriction? I know theres not an exhaust restriction because I already took it off and checked the header pipe.. Or do we need to do more to take advantage of this new variator?

Thanks for any and all replies! Sorry if this is a newb question. Im not too knowledgeable about AF05E performance.

How old is the belt? Check the width to be sure it can climb the new pulley. A worn belt can't get there.
Also, on the stock motor it could possibly need to have heavier roller weights, try 7.5's?

The belt is a relatively new stock belt, I thought he bought a Polini belt to go with it but I guess not. I'll look and see if I have any heavier weights around that I could let him use, I think I have my stock af16's 8g weights somewhere. Thanks for the tip..

Besides that however, are there any known restrictions on these AF05s?

Not really besides the stock variator being SLIGHTLY limited w a plate on the back, but if you replaced it w afyermarket variator you should be doing 40 or so. Swap to a new belt and maybe bbq the exhaust and up jet? Sometimes the main jet is kinda small.

Depends on which SE50 you have. If you have an SE50P then the restrictions are 3 things. The variator, a restricted SE50P exhaust and a smaller main jet. Handle these 3 things and it does 40. In my experience, the stock motor likes #87 main jet the best.

Yes benji i did notice the plate on the back of the variator, but we put the polini variator on now, so thats not the issue.

Thanks for that link I totally forgot about wikispreedia! So his Vin says its a regular non restricted se50 but judging by the pic of the exhaust, it looks like the restricted one. Maybe the po put a restricted pipe on it, but i did remove the pipe and theres no washer welded in there like the af16 pipes... Hmmmm looks like we have some digging to do. Thanks for the replies.

Bruh, If there was a plate on the stock variator then its an SE50P. Check the big white VIN sticker on the vertical frame section just to the left of the variator. Look at the small model letters just below the first few digits of the VIN. It will say SE50P or SE50.

Also, theres no washer of any kind on the restricted exhaust. Its restriction is the design and it cannot be "DE"-restricted. It must be replaced by an un-restricted type exhaust from an SE50. Just know, they are not easy to come by and their prices reflect their rarity.

Once you locate an exhaust, I suggest trying the stock rollers with the Polini variator if they aren't flat-spotted too bad.

The non-p bikes have plates on the backs of there variators too. Check your vin that's the best way to tell. If your muffler is in decent looking shape you might be able to "bbq" it to get rid of the carbon build up. If not, I might have a used oem muffler somewhere.

To reaffirm my claim...recent Ebay completed auctions show that a RESTRICTED SE50 exhaust sold for $30...an UN-RESTRICTED exhaust sold for $75.99.

This is true regardless of weather or not it's a restricted muffler. Both can be cleaned to increase performance, but one will still be restricted.

Regardless of eBay price, I still have a un-restricted one available.

If you can find a Leo Vince pipe it will do even better than an unrestricted pipe

There's several out of production pipes still available if you look hard enough, but I'm not sure about Leo Vince. I wouldn't be surprised tho, there used to be quite a few available.
