Ideas for removing the front "stay"?

Post by ngoethel »

Hi all,

I'm trying to replace my cracked front cover on my 2001 Elite SR. So far it's been a straightforward process (outside of sourcing, which has been more difficult) but I can't seem to get the stay to come out. I've removed the screws, but it seems to still be held in place by a plastic "tab" on the bottom that is attached to the rest of the plastic molding.

I've attached a parts diagram for reference. The stay is #3. I can add pictures of the bike itself later if that helps more.

Thanks!

The plastic tab is part of the fender (black) below so you just have to carefully pull it forward a bit, then you can access the bracket you want to remove.

Thanks. I'll give it a shot tonight and see what happens.

Does the "stay" need to come off to replace the front plastic nose/hood? I have an sa50 build starting after my current one is finished and was wondering. Thx.
I need to find some new haters...the ones I have are starting to like me.

It doesn't have to. Mine was bent from a fender bender that also cracked the hood.

I figured that. Just wondering why you were trying to remove it. First post was only about replacing the plastic.

I already knew that. Just wondering why you were trying to remove it. First post was only about replacing the plastic.
The stay itself was bent and would not line up with the holes on the plastic cover. I've now learned that the frame itself is bent.

I have seen front crashes on the sa50's and what usually gets bent is the piece the part you were trying to remove mounts onto, but not the actual frame. Take your time and hammer it back into place as best you can then re-assemble. I've done this myself. Fairly easy to fix. Use the diagram you posted to see what I'm talking about.
