Won't start

Post by Klaessig »

Hey guys, sorry for a total newb question but I'm stumped. 85 spree won't start.
Getting gas,
I cleaned out carb multiple times (made sure all micro holes open), it's getting spark,
good compression.
Will start if I squirt gas/oil mix into cylinder. Once started in that fashion it will stay running but it's an extremely high idle so I don't usually leave it running for more than a few seconds. Please help!! Thanks in advance

Check the petcock, make sure you have vacuum going to it and that it isn't clogged. Make sure gas comes from the fuel lines when vacuum is applied.

sounds like throttle valve came in wrong way, or not seating well...

Betting your slide is in backward, or cable is hung up.

Hung up cable sounds right, as throttle feels very odd...almost stuck open. I assume that would affect starting? I tried removing the throttle valve, plugging the hole and then attempting to start but it didn't even feel like it wanted to start at all.

Did you read what noiseguy said and checked ?
There is notches in the carb that guide the throttle thing down

Yes, it is properly aligned. Cable seems to not be hung up. but would stuck throttle make such a difference when starting that the scooter wouldn't even "try to" start at all?

Greetings:

Uhh, yeah. These things start on the starter "enrichener" only if the throttle is closed. Adding that much air entry area with a throttle stuck open results in the inhalation of an uncombustibly lean mixture. It MIGHT start, eventually if the engine friction-warms enough, but if it does you'll be scrambling for the Kill switch because it'll rev to the moon.
