Rusty CrankShaft?

Post by petrup93 »

I got a shaft problem boys...
I would post a pic but the file size is too big, i have a crankshaft inside of a case and there is a little rust on it...
Would I be able use this crankshaft with no problem? Just pour more oil in there and sit back?
Acquired these from an elderly fellow who had it sitting outside everything else on is doing pretty good...

All depends how rusty it is. Light surface rust is harmless to the crank but the concern would be on the bearings and cylinder walls. I would pull the jug and inspect the bore for pitting. If it doesnt seem too bad, coat everything with oil and reinstall with new gaskets. Test compression before attempting to start. If it has good compression, run it and pray the bearings hold up. It should go without saying that flushing out the old fuel and oil is vital before any of this. Rub a rabbit's foot, get a few lucky horseshoes and keep as many fingers crossed as you can manage.
I need to find some new haters...the ones I have are starting to like me.
