I'm trying to start my 86 spree project and I've noticed when I try to turn it over the oil pump is loose and is spitting oil

I'm guessing something is loose and needs a seal?
That reminds me of a joke....
The punch line is "no, I just had ice cream"

Re: Oil pump spits oil when trying to start
Im sure youre aware that it simply needs to be tightened down. Force it down in there and crank the bolt down. The leak is causing low-to-zero crankcase pressure and it wont run right...if at all. Just be careful when getting the teeth on the pump and crankshaft to mesh. It can sometimes be a pain. After its tight and before you attempt to start, take the fan cover off and rotate the fan by hand back and forth to make sure there no binding and the teeth are happy inside.
I need to find some new haters...the ones I have are starting to like me.

On another forum they seem to think it's the o ring.

At this point you should remove the oil pump and find out if the O-ring is present. If not, replace.thxcuz wrote:On another forum they seem to think it's the o ring.

I removed the pump to take a look. should the shaft just come out? I see it's threaded, does it thread into something? I removed my pump and the shaft was still in there.

Greetings:
It's been a long time since I've handled a stock pump, but yes the shaft slides out pretty easily. But as I recall there's an O-ring in there to keep it from Falling out.

Shaft will come out, sometimes. You should be able to twist it easily out of case.
Just watched video. You either need to replace gasket or install new one. It's an o-ring.
