Oil Leak 1999 Elite SR

Post by Stan1999 »

Just bought a 1999 Elite SR with 600 miles. Have put 250 miles on it and it runs great. Filled with 20 ounces of fresh oil and now is leaking oil. Appears to be from coming from oil tank, runs down tire and pools on the floor. I searched for similar oil leaks and don't see this topic. Sorry if has been covered before. Not sure where to look and what things to take off to get at the oil tank.

Welcome to the forum! Congrats on your sweet new purchase. Bummer about your oil leak but it sounds like an easy one. FINDING a leak is sometimes trickier than the repair. You say " Appears to be from coming from oil tank" so Im assuming youre not exactly sure of the leak location. First step is removing the body panels to gain visual access. This can be done with basic tools and minimal mechanical knowledge.

Check out this video for body panel removal....THANK YOU MicBergsma! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hSFuAFpK9eY

Do some investigating and FIND THAT LEAK! Once youve pinpointed the culprit, come back for easy repair details! You'll likely be able to repair it with no further help.
I need to find some new haters...the ones I have are starting to like me.

Removed body panels with the help of the youtube link. Found oil is leaking from what appears to be the level sensor? I can post a pic if you need, but I assume you know where the leak is. I didn't remove the cap/plug as more oil was leaking out when I lifted it. It is real loose. Is there a bad O ring or something? Appreciate any help.

I have had those sensors leak on me too. I stopped "topping off" the reservoir and only add about 1/3rd quart of oil when the red oil light comes on and this dramatically reduced the leaking. I'm not saying it stopped it, just reduced it a whole bunch. Just a tip for those who don't want to pull the whole thing apart just to get to it......

+1 on leaking oil sensor. Just solved the same issue on my Aero 80.

I used a hot glue gun to seal the sensor to the tank. Kind of a hack, but seems to have stopped the leak.
