2001 elite top speed issues

Post by Ian.duvall77 »

Ok so I've got a 2001 Honda Elite 50 that I got off of the guy for 175 bucks. It did run really good when I first got it but I noticed it had a real bad exhaust leak. So I tried finding ways to seal the exhaust and I snapped one of the bolts off that the exhaust mounts to. So I used some gasket maker to seal the port which worked then I noticed that my exhaust pipe was clogged. So I tried the chemical clean and that didn't work very well so I tried the bonfire clean and I ended up bending my pipe to where it wouldn't fit on to the motor. Now when I got it it had no air filter but like I said it was running really good but I got one of them uni pod filters and put that on there and it was still running good but now I've bought a new OEM exhaust 4 my model Elite and it didn't exactly Mount up perfectly the porch seems to hang just a tad bit too low I've got it mounted up but barely. Before I put this new exhaust on I noticed after I cleaned it the first time the chemical way it ran really well getting about 32 miles per hour on flat well the exhaust clogged backup rather quickly so I tried burning it bent the thing I bought a new exhaust and now I'm only getting 28 miles per hour with a tail wind behind me. Please someone help me this is my first ever scooter I'm really enjoying working on it but I have no idea where to go next.

Let me also point out that the scooter ran its absolute best when it had that exhaust leak when I first got it which after reading some of the threads on here doesn't quite make sense to me

welcome
is it the s or sr? you might need to change jets(up jet as your now letting more air in than stock) since you put on the pod filter. if you cant rejet Id suggest trying to find a stock air box and filter(for sale section). so your exhaust is only running one bolt where it attaches to the head? just trying to clarify. if it is the s model there is a restricting washer on the exhaust that you need to grind out(there are many threads showing what im talking about just search for it)
an unrestricted model(sr) will run in the 40s bone stock. and $175 is a great deal.
if you dont know much about 2 strokes please do some reading here as there is a ton of great info. I literally spent weeks reading every single post that I could when I first bought my elite. these are great bikes with motors than can me made to 60-70 mph fairly easily.
oh pics help for us that cant see what is going diagnose your issue. I use a pic resizing app on my phone and upload that way. you just need to find the right size that it will let you upload.

I tried resizing my other pictures but for some reason it keeps saying that they're too big still. Notice on the mounting bolts on the muffler not at the head where I'm missing one mounting bolt it's not matching up properly the exhaust I have is a brand new OEM sa50 exhaust muffler. Now my scooter is an sa50p . And I'm pretty positive that the variator restriction has been taken out and my old Muffler you could see where it had been drilled at the end of the pipe. So the part number on my muffler matches the part number for the sa50 muffler which should be unrestricted. And not only that but when I got it it would do between 32 and 35. I am very new to Two Strokes I've had Elite now for a little over a month or so and I've been doing nothing but reading up on this forum and watching videos on YouTube and learning as much as I can about these scooters. I still can't quite understand why the OEM exhaust that I got doesn't Mount properly to my engine..... Very confusing

Couple things
Is the pipe new? If not it's possible it got bent by previous owner. Scooter swap shop sell better gaskets that are a lot better in my opinion and they are cheap. I don't recommend running the exhaust like you are. Need to fix the bolt problem on the head for sure.

If you put on a pod filter and didn't rejet your carb to compensate your motor will not run right. Pretty sure you will need to upjet. To what I'm not sure but I'm sure it's been posted about. Your bike needs air+fuel+spark to run so if your air to fuel mix is off your bike will not run right. Hondasan engineered the motor to run on a certain mix and as soon as you change something it's thrown off.

If your bike is unrestricted and your not going over 40 something is wrong. When you bought it didn't change fuel lines and clean carb? How long did it sir before you got it? How many miles? New spark plug?

Just s tip about 2 strokes if they get hot they seize and they do it could be bad. Typically if you run your bike to lean or if there are airleaks this can cause problems. Your bike will run best when everything is air tight and when your mix is correct.

My pic size says 400x400 roughly when I resize mine to use them so pretty small

A couple more pics. It's a brand new pipe, pic of the part number below. And haven't up jetted yet due to not having a clue as to what type of jets to buy(the carb on it is a cheap aftermarket that was on it when I got it). Stuff I've done since I got it: new spark plug, new battery, new tires and rear wheel(working on getting the matching front wheel cause rear is a tubeless rim), pod air filter(cause there was nothing on it before), waiting on an actual sa50 throttle cable to come in at this moment. I think that by itself will solve part of my problem. The throttle cable on it, the outer casing is not long enough so I had to Jerry-rig it to work properly(I'll post pic after this post) so I think that being screwy is messing with the whole deal in and of itself lol

A throttle cable would certainly improve the situation. The one you have looks kinked and too short.
You also need to find a stock SA50 carb for that thing. Guess what, I have one if youre looking.
I need to find some new haters...the ones I have are starting to like me.

Hi Ian. If you have the fan and the fan shroud off it will overheat the motor and cause issues. Put those items back on. GL.

I've been looking around for one but haven't been able to find one in a price range I can afford right now. What you asking for yours? And also it didn't have a fan or shroud on it when I got it. A so called scooter mechanic here in town where I live said as long as I don't have all the plastics on and there is open air hitting the motor that it should be fine, just not to sit still with it running for too long.

There may already be damage to the piston/cylinder from the exhaust leaking. I would not run it until I inspected the piston looking into the exhaust port when you remove the pipe to see if there is any signs of damage. That's a lot of oil build up in that area just under the pipe. Looks like it's been leaking for some time. I would suggest you do a compression test to see if it's even worth going further. If it checks out good (above 115 psi) then you can proceed.
You will have to replace that broken stud. Pull the exhaust pipe off and try to extract both of those broken bolts with a vise-grip tool and use some penetrating oil and propane torch to heat the area up. That always helps. Use a correctly threaded bolt for the cylinder to exhaust connection with a new oem (honda) original exhaust ring gasket. Those work the best for the stock pipe.
Absolutely get a fan, both sides of shroud and use the oem (honda) original spark plug seal to get the best cooling. The oem carb is best bet for reliability and try to get a better (original) air box and oiled air filter, rather than using the pod filter.
You've got yourself a little project there so if you plan on doing all this and keeping it, you should consider reading thru all the information here on this site to get the best idea of what's good, and what's not good for these scooters. Welcome and good luck!
