New Spree Owner Help!

Post by Andrus »

Please help me figure out my problem with my 1985 Honda Spree

Previous Owner had engine rebuild. Deleted Oil pump and just uses pre mix gas

Carb was missing air carb screw when I purchased. I have since replaced carb screw

I have replaced spark plug

I have replaced bystarter

I have replaced ignition coil

I have added fresh pre mixed fuel

The spree runs so randomly. The idle is going all over the place. It revs up clean especially when its tilted on its side.
It will die when in upright position if i let it idle. It bogs under load. What the * is going on ?!

What ratio of fuel/oil are you using? Don't wanna over-saturate a Spree, it will run shoddy.

Air filter, is it in good shape, is it even there? Air box lid, is it there and on securely? Additionally is the boot from the air box to the carb on securely and tight?

I'm wondering now if you might have an air leak on the intake where the carb connects. Have you tried soapy water sprayed on it to check for leaks/bubbles/idle changes?

I haven't tried soapy water sprayed on there. When I took the carb off to clean it I accidently stripped the carb bolts. So I used slightly longer bolts and put jam nuts on the ends of them. I was able to cinch them down pretty darn tight.

I have read something on wiki that the 1984-1985 sprees have a different carb then the 86-87. Something about the 87 having better baffling within the carb to prevent fuel going into the wrong places?

What did you replace these with? Alot of the no-name replacement parts are absolute junk. Some are decent...most will cause more problems than they fix.
I need to find some new haters...the ones I have are starting to like me.

On the carb, there is a inlet or outlet not sure which on the bottom of the carb. Wiki labels this as "drain". Mine has no hose attached to it. Should there be a hose attached to it leading somewhere?

Yes, there should be a hose on that outlet,
but it is strictly for routing any overflow away from hot engine parts to avoid fire.
Hanging down below the side cover is the place to route the hose.

Do some digging into the NQ50 service manual and check to see if the replacement coil you installed provides the correct voltage needed.
