bystarter question

Most comments regarding a malfunctioning bystarter indicate that the barrel/needle can be stuck in the open position, allowing excess fuel to enter the motor even after warm-up. Is it possible for the barrel/needle to stick in the closed position, not allowing enriching to take place during cold starts?

The by starter can become inoperational and that would cause it to stay closed I think. But that is a little rare cause of the nature of how it works. When it breaks it usually stays open in my experiences.

Yes, indeed, the bystarter can malfunction in either position.

I believe you can test it by removing it and giving it power. It has a little needle that should move after about a minute or two.

Yes it can. I bench tested it with a 12v battery when I last cleaned the carb. The bystarter heated up as it was supposed to and the needle/barrel moved about 1/8" as I recall.
