No spark, blinking LED on CDI Spree

Trying to get a honda spree running.
I have replaced the spark plug, ignition coil and CDI box.
The aftermarket CDI box has a green LED on it. When i hit the starter, the light blinks but
it is very faint.
Any idea if that points to the pulse pickup, or the alt?
I tried to shim the pulse pickup, since the gap looked too big. But that made no
difference.
Is there any chance the kill switch could be bad? Would the CDI light up if the
kill switch was bad?
Is there a way to bypass the kill switch just to test, without cutting wires?
I want to eliminate as much as possible before I put down any more $. A replacement alt looks expensive at $75, so I don't want to buy one unless I can be sure that is the problem. Mind you,
i don't even know if the motor or trans are good yet!
Is there any other component that is part of the ignition system?
