Spree gas tank drain

Post by Volvo850R »

Hello. I donÔÇÖt feel like getting out my little pump so if I really want to drain this gas tank on my spree can I just disconnect the fuel line from the carb and put suction on the vacume line to the petcock And that line will drain the tank? Thanks again

Yes, should work that way. Keeping vacuum on the line is key.

What I usually do is insert fuel line into desired container to be deposited. Apply suction on vac line to open petcock. When fuel flows, fold vac line in half and petcock will remain open for the remainder of the draining. This eliminates the need to apply suction for the entire duration.

Keep in mind, there will still be a but of fuel left inside after flow stops. In case you plan on pulling the petcock and/or in-tank filter...have a shop towel ready for the last bit.

Thanks. I was just going to replace the lines and junk the old gas. The petcock and tank filter wasnt gong to mess with. It runs fine. No reason to right? Unless since it empty replace petcock?

Dont replace petcock unless its faulty. The in-tank fuel filter should be cleaned or replaced since youre in there. Its a good idea to have a NEW filter on-hand before you attempt to remove the old one. Sure, they can be removed and cleaned but sometimes they are stuck in the fuel tank bung and get destroyed on removal. I have about a 50% success rate of removing/cleaning/re-using without damaging it.

I havent gotten into it yet. Is it a strainer type? What about new line with an inline filter? Thanks

Filter is just a screen tube that shoves into the fuel tank bung before the petcock goes on. They can be cleaned and re-used if you can remove without ripping the screen. See pic..

The in-line filters work fine but wont protect junk from getting to your petcock valve. Personally, Im not a fan. New fue/vac lines get my thumbs up tho! I get mine off the roll at the local auto parts store. Two feet of each is $5-$6. Bring your old lines with you for sizing. They wont have the exact I/D of tubing but close enough to work.

Careful on buying cheap China petcocks from ebay that claim they fit a Spree. Most of them have the wrong threads and wont bolt on. Some have gotten lucky and have had success but Ive tried two different ones myself with no luck....almost stripped the threads on my tank trying too. Buyer beware.

The supply of Spree parts dried up many years ago. When I asked my local Honda Motorsorts for Spree parts, he looked at me like I had two heads...good luck.

No, pretty sure there is a difference in size. This subject has been discussed recently on the board. Search will help you find the comments.

Greetings:

I know first-hand that the '85 petcock on the Aero models will NOT fit later years. Apparently Honda switched the Sprees as well.
