1986 Spree fuel delivery help.

Post by Mike Hurley »

86 Spree, 6K miles. Turns over, has spark, will start if primed through spark plug hole. Appears a small vacuum line from carb to gas valve opens valve.Works okay. Is 90 pounds compression enough to activate valve and run ? Just seems to be not getting gas through carb to cylinder.

As a rule, No, 90# is not enough compression.
It might be enough to open the petcock, it might be enough to run, but it will not have much power./
DO YOU HAVE THE AIRBOX INSTALLED?/
Also, how many times have you cleaned the carb and verified all passages to be clear?

Yes, have cleaned carb, not sure of what auto bystarter purpose is, or how it may prevent starting. When it runs it goes just fine but now wonÔÇÖt start unless primed. If you turn it on and off, will start okay, but after sitting for an hour or so, just turns over, wonÔÇÖt fire up

Do you have the airbox installed ?
By-starter is a thermo-reactive valve that opens and closes the cold-start enrichment circuit. Functions similar to a choke.
If it is malfunctioning, problems are eminent. Testing is simple. Remove bystarter and connect leads to 12volts and observe needle length. Read about it in Wikispreedia.LINK http://hondaspree.net/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=22586 Search forum threads with the "Search" link at the top-right of the page.
Your hard start problem after one hour sitting is pointing toward a bad petcock and a float or float valve problem.

Excuse my ignorance, but what is the air Box? IÔÇÖve had this Spree probably 18 years, have removed nothing, has always started right up. Never licensed on road, just run around the neighborhood, has always been fine ÔÇÿtil now.

Its the black box that holds the air filter. Sits directly above the rear tire and the lid is held on by a single bolt/screw and a couple side snaps. The Spree is very picky about the foam filter being in place, properly oiled and in good condition. If youve had the Spree THAT many years and havent recently replaced it, its probably degraded to the point where it has crumbled into small pieces. These filter chunks wreak havoc on tiny carb passages and plug them indefinitely. Take the filter out and tell us what you find....I bet it will disintegrate in your hands.

If you need a filter, I suggest you purchase here: http://stores.ebay.com/noiseguysstore

Not only are these filters of the highest quality, fit perfect and made with OEM spec foam...the proceeds help keep this forum alive. I always spring for the filter/sparkplug combo to get a fresh NGK plug with it. Icing on the cake!

If you find that the filter has disintergrated and been sucked into the carburetor, that carb clean you did needs to be done again until every orifice is clear before proper tune can be achieved.
