1999 Elite S derestricting.

Post by marcinzd »

HELP. Just a handy 'Andy' working on 1999 Elite S with son. Other than exhaust, air box and main jet ( I think I know how to deal with those) how do I go about variator back plate . Someone said -remove it. Can I just remove it or do I need to replace it with one that is unrestricted? And what does it look like, will attach picture-which one is it? 1 or 2. Thank you for any help.

While I'm not the tuner you need, the item #1 is the part to be removed.
Item #2 is the "ramp plate". and this too can be swapped for a ramp plate
that has a completely different profile, thus giving you a new set of characteristics.
Someone please tell this member which ramp plates are compatible and yield improved performance.
In conjunction with the ramp, NEW rollers are highly recommended...and the change of weight of rollers will also yield
performance change.
My personal experience of installing "Dr. Pulley Sliders" in place of "rollers" yielded some major differences that were all very positive.
This item "variator" is a good place to achieve improvement in both ends of the performance spectrum.
Purchase of aftermarket variator is something you should research and consider. IMHO... :urban:

....and please remove all traces of the dreaded grease! Honda changed it at some point. No grease is needed. Also, be aware of re-assembly of those parts and avoid serious damage. The service manual can be consulted for this. You may need to source a few tools to successfully accomplish your task. http://www.hondaspree.net/other/SA50_88-02_service.pdf

if you go to harbor freight and look for a oil filter wrench. its 10 bucks and can hold your drive face to loosen the nut. others use impacts to do it but I like to have something that I can do it if I dont have power tools. I spent countless hours trying to find something that will work for this and finally stumbled across this. the one downside is after so many uses due to how far out you need to the adjustment knob it tends to strip the threads. but for 10 bucks I just go grab another one. its bulky but I still ride with it in my seat bucket at all times.
