92 Elite SA50 Ignition / No Spark / Shut Down Unexpectedly

Post by PcolaBeach »

So the bike was running well on the bench after rebuilding the carburetor and simply shut down. I can confirm there is no spark using a good spark plug tested via the lawnmower. Using the Service Manual, I've been through all of the resistance checks within Section 15 and everything appears to be within limits.

Additionally, I set up my Fluke to measure AC voltage on the black/red and green wires at the connector to the Ignition Control Module and got 104 vac while using the starter to rotate the flywheel.

Further, I set up my Fluke to measure DC voltage on the black/yellow and green wires at the wire connectors to the ignition coil and got 54 vdc while using the starter to rotate the flywheel.

I also attempted to measure DC voltage at the boot end of the spark plug wire although while turning over the engine, I was unable to measure any voltage.

I really don't know what the DC voltage should be at the ignition coil but 54 vdc seems low. I'm trying to be tactical on parts and believe the problem to be with either the ignition control module (most likely?) or the ignition coil (to a lesser extent) and would appreciate any input from the forum that might objectively help.

Thank you!

Problem corrected by replacing ICM.

Normally, the members here would offer advice to help you along...
but it seemed you had already chosen the best path to finding the
culprit. Myself, I do not have the knowledge that you apparently do
in this regard, so keeping mouth shut seemed the best idea.
Well done PcolaBeach :hi: ....mm
